4 Exercises for teens to get fit and build confidence

Reading time: 6 minutes

Exercising is a great way to get fit, build your confidence and have fun at the same time. The great thing about exercising is that you can choose to do it at your own pace and you don’t have to do it alone. Best of all, you can start slowly before building up your fitness and confidence levels.

You can also choose to exercise with your friends, and there are a huge range of exercises to choose from! Here are five exercises for teenagers that you and your friends can choose to do to get started.

1. Cardio exercises in the gym

The gym is a great place to do cardio exercises, including:

  • Treadmill running
  • Mountain climbing
  • Rowing
  • Exercise bike workouts
  • Bodycombat
  • A range of aerobic fitness and high intensity interval training (HIIT) classes.

If you haven't tried our Body Combat class before, it's an energetic program inspired by martial arts that draws from a wide array of disciplines such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai.

At HBF Arena, we offer a ‘Fit Club’ for teenagers where you can do a range of cardio classes, including Zumba.

2. Strength exercises in the gym

The gym is also a great place for strength training. Modern gyms have a range of equipment that you can use to strengthen and tone your muscles, including pin-loaded weight machines, free weights and dumbbells. Strength training is a great complement to cardio exercise.

Yoga and Pilates are two forms of low-impact exercise that you mightn’t necessarily associate with strength training, but these classes are increasingly popular ways to develop core muscle strength. Your core is the group of muscles around your abdomen and pelvis. Both yoga and Pilates classes can also improve your flexibility and balance.

Our ‘Fit Club’ also offers a range of yoga and Pilates classes.

3. Swimming

Swimming is a great way to exercise and it’s a full body, low-impact, cardio workout that can also help you to cool down on a hot day. It’s not just a winter exercise either because all of our  pools at HBF Arena are heated. The benefits of swimming include:

  • Improving your fitness and endurance
  • Toning your muscles
  • Improving your flexibility and coordination
  • Increasing your lung capacity.

4. Playing a team sport

Playing a team sport is another great way to exercise, socialize and have fun all at the same time. At HBF Arena, we are home to the Wanneroo Wolves, who run teen basketball leagues. We also run Junior Sporting Clinics throughout the week, teaching the fundamentals of soccer, basketball & netball to young teens. Sign up for a team sport today and develop skills and make friends for life.

Remember - life’s a balance!

The Department of Health recommends that you have a balance between exercise, sedentary behaviour and sleep each day. Each day, you should aim for:

  • 60 minutes of aerobic exercise.
  • several hours of light physical activity.
  • 8 to 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Three strength training sessions per week are also recommended to help with your muscle and bone development.
