Following the Perth Wildcats recent win of the 2018-19 NBL Championship, theres no doubt the team has inspired many young Aussies, putting WA on the map for basketball.
The exciting atmosphere of games and bond between team mates are just some of the reasons why it is such a great first sport to play. Along with this there are also many other great reasons why basketball should be a sport to consider when starting your child out in their first program. Some of these include:
With consistent practice, children will start to notice gradual improvements in their abilities when playing basketball. Wether its playing a really good game or improving their shooting accuracy, as their abilities start to improve, so will their self-confidence. This improved self confidence can carry with them into their schooling life , when they will start to believe in themselves and their abilities more.
Friendships for life:
One of the main components that guides the success of a basketball team is their internal bond. This means no matter what team children sign up for, they will create a bond with their team mates and create friendships for life. Every game day also exposes children to a whole new team of players their age and can encourage them to expand their social circle.
Room to grow:
When starting basketball, the sky is the limit! Basketball in Australia offers players many opportunities to excel. With WABL, NBL and casual sporting seasons run in both summer and winter, once they start kids will develop a skill they can keep using well into their adult life. This also gives children the oppurtunity to stay in the smaller leagues with friends or if they are passionate, move up the ladder through more competitive leagues.
Great for fitness:
With only five players per side and a court that is 30m long, Basketball is definitely a sport that involves a lot of agility training and fitness benefits. In addition to the constant running up and down the length of the court, basketball requires players to have quick reactions using advanced footwork and hand-eye coordination to respond to team and opposing players movements.
During the basketball season kids will often play a game each week. Through this consistent exposure to a competitive game environment, their sportsmanship will begin to grow. With this they will start to learn that you can't win every game and the importance of becoming a respectable loser. This can help children in later life as they learn that their is no success without failure.
