8 ways to keep active during winter

Posted: 17 May 2021

Exercising during winter can be fun as well as being good for you!

You’ll find it much easier to exercise when the mercury drops if you do an activity you enjoy. Here are 8 ways to exercise during winter:

1. Join a gym

Gyms are indoors, so you can’t use the cold weather as an excuse for not pumping some iron. You can vary the gym exercises you do depending on whether you want to:

  • build muscle (doing low reps of heavy weights),
  • tone your body, or
  • just increase your cardiovascular fitness with high intensity interval (HIIT) sessions.

Going to the gym is also something you can do by yourself, with a partner or in a group class. Working out with others is a great way to keep yourself accountable during the cold winter months. You’ll also have fun too.

Check out our state-of-the art gym facilities at HBF Arena to find out more.

2. Swim in a heated pool

A heated pool during winter is the perfect place to warm yourself up this winter!

Our 50-meter, 10-lane, indoor lap pool at HBF Arena is heated to a very comfortable 26.5 degrees all-year round. We offer aquatic group fitness classes, or you can either swim laps solo or with a training partner if you prefer. The choice is yours!

Swimming has been shown to have numerous health benefits for people of all ages, including providing a full-body cardiovascular workout. It’s also easy on your joints.

3. Play futsal

Futsal is an indoor sport that’s similar to soccer. The key differences are that:

  • it’s played on a hard, smaller court,
  • the two opposing teams only have five players (including the goalkeeper), and
  • it’s played with a smaller, harder ball that doesn’t bounce like a soccer ball does.

At HBF Arena, we have futsal courts and three competition seasons for men’s teams per year, catering for all ability levels. If you sign up, you also get free use of our gym and pool facilities for a month. You’ll be fit in no time, and have fun as well.

4. Play netball

Netball is another indoor sport you can play all-year round to keep fit. We host both mixed and ladies netball competitions at HBF Arena. Whether you want to play socially or competitively, we have a competition for you!

And again, if you sign up, you also get free use of our gym and pool facilities for a month.

5. Do activities with the kids

Doing activities with your kids in winter kills two birds with one stone. You can get active while spending quality time with them. Why not play a game of cricket or kick a footy around at the park?

If they enjoy it, consider enrolling them in a netball, basketball or soccer clinic at HBF Arena so that they can have fun and improve their skills at the same time.

6. Go cycling

Cycling is a low-impact form of exercise and you don’t necessarily need a bike to do it. At HBF Arena, we have a range of stationary exercise bikes and we offer a range of cycling classes from beginner-level through to endurance or HIIT sessions.

7. Go for a run

Even if you’re cold, your body will quickly warm up if you go for a run. It’s also great for your cardiovascular fitness!

8. Take yoga classes

For when the winter weather hits, escape the rain and enjoy this increasingly popular form of exercise.

Designed to increase stamina, strength and flexibility, yoga requires you to stretch and contract all your major muscle groups.

At HBF Arena, we offer a variety of group fitness classes to suit.
