Kick-start the new year with lap swimming!
Posted: 10 January 2020
Get your new years fitness resolutions well on track with lap swimming. As well as providing the opportunity to switch up your workouts this year, there are plenty of other benefits to switching the runners for flippers in 2020.
Refreshing
How often can you say your workout was refreshing? Not only does swimming help beat the summer heat, it also gets your body working overtime without that uncomfortable sweaty feeling. Try taking up swimming and leave your workout feeling refreshed, cool and relaxed.
Affordable
When it comes to exercising and gym classes, things can quickly become expensive. Work on boosting your savings this year by swimming for fitness! It's as easy as slipping on your bathers and heading down to your local beach for a workout that will cost you nothing. If you don't have access to a beach nearby, try out your local leisure centre where a swim can cost as little as $6.50. Much less than any workout or cardio class.
Full body strength
Swimming is great for building full-body strength. When swimming laps, the main muscle groups in both your upper and lower body are being utilized as you glide and kick your way through the water. To further intensify your strength training, tools such as a kick board or flippers can be added to your workout to further target the leg muscles and switching strokes will work on your arm and upper body muscles.
Fitness for everyone
The low-impact nature of swimming means it is an appropriate exercise for pretty much anyone! Whether you are suffering an injury or have become more injury-prone with age, swimming is the exercise for you. When in the pool, the buoyancy of the water bears most of the weight felt on your major joints, making it a gentle exercise to get back into your fitness.
Year-round
Although often only associated with the summer heat, swimming is an exercise that can be enjoyed year-round. As the cooler weather starts to approach, continuing your progress is as simple as slipping on your bathers and moving indoors to a pool at your local rec centre. Continuing your swims during the wetter weather does also come with it's benefits as numbers in the pool start to dwindle and finding a free lane is a regular occurrence.
Fun
Swimming can be just the change you need to get on top of your fitness again. It's easy to mix up your routine by simply changing the location of your swim, whether it's a new beach or trying out a different indoor pool. You can also recruit a friend and embark on your swim journey together! At the end of each session you can reward yourself with some leisure time for a fun race or kick back, relax and enjoy the water.
