Tips to keep kids active during school holidays

Posted: 29 June 2016

The advantages of activity to your kids physical and mental health are well documented. You probably know that keeping your kids active not only teaches them fundamental coordination and balance skills, but it also gives them the opportunity to make connections and enhance their social skills.

At school being active is a huge part of your kids day, not only during recess and lunch but also during physical education classes. When it comes to the school holidays though, motivating your kids to stay active can be difficult. A good way to keep your kids active during the school holidays is to head somewhere where your kids can take part in indoor sports and activities while you can enjoy a coffee.

Most Perth suburbs have facilities that offer school holiday activities such as the following:

Kids Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a school holiday activity that your kids can participate in regardless of age. Toddlers learn the basics of tumbling, balancing and coordination in the company of a parent or guardian. When children are a little bit older and a bit more independent, they can participate in kindy gymnastics that focuses on the development of fundamental coordination skills and self-confidence. As these skills develop, instructors will incorporate gymnastic apparatuses are into the activity.

Kids Sports

Soccer, basketball and netball are fun school holiday activities if your kids are interested in group sports. Each week of the school holidays a qualified instructor will teach your kids a specific skill in their chosen sport. Instructors will work one on one with children to develop their skills and they can test out their skills with peers.

In soccer training, children will learn ball skills, footwork and field awareness. Basketball and netball will teach your kids the fundamental skills of footwork, shooting, dribbling and court awareness so they can gain confidence in their sporting abilities.

Heading to the beach during summer is such big parts of culture in Perth. While swimming seems like a normal part of our lives, we can’t forget the importance of developing the skill of confident swimming. Learning to swim can be a fun and rewarding school holiday activity and can help develop your kid's confidence.
